An Online Monster

Amazon.com is ranked as the number two fortune 500 company in America. The highly successful company has made its mark and continually progresses the business world and its growing use of technology. Serving as a major online e-commerce company since 1995, the company has made billions of dollars in profit. Jeff Bezos and his company's legendary reputation would not be possible without the implementation of management information systems.

Information Technology Through the Lens of Amazon

A complete and stable management information system aids companies in making business decisions, small or large. For example, a system that tracks how much inventory on hand a warehouse has can be tracked by a manager in a city office. This intel assists companies like Amazon to make fast and cost-efficient decisions, like when to order more inventory and how much to order. It makes sense that when you run a company that is that big and fully online, that you would need a steady system to keep things in line.

Management information systems also benefit Amazon in the sense that Amazon uses these systems and data to generate reports. Such reports are utilized by managers, employees, shareholders, and anyone else interested in the financials of the company. Accurate reporting of data into these systems will show a company what they are doing right, what they are doing wrong, and open a door to employees to seek out trends and take advantage of certain business opportunities.
